You can hire a DJ. You can hire a band. You can build a playlist and hope somebody remembers to turn it up after dinner.
Or you can do something a little different.
We’re Liza & Josh, a husband-and-wife entertainment duo providing party entertainment in NJ, Bergen County, Rockland County and throughout the Hudson Valley.
We sing live. We DJ. We take requests. And we don’t arrive with a predetermined idea of what your party is supposed to sound like.
That’s important because the best private parties have something that weddings, corporate events and public shows don’t always have:
Everybody in the room is connected somehow.
They have history together.
Give us a room full of people with history and the music becomes a lot more interesting.

Some entertainers perform at a party.
We’d rather perform with one.
Someone hears the first few notes of a song and yells, “Oh my God, this was our song!”
Another guest comes over with a request.
One table starts singing the chorus.
Someone who hasn’t been on a dance floor since 1997 suddenly decides tonight is the night.
Those moments can’t really be programmed into a setlist.
You have to pay attention.
Years of performing live music in North Jersey restaurants and venues have taught us how to read a room: when to push it, when to pull back, when to take a request and when to abandon whatever we thought we were going to play next.
It’s one of the reasons private parties are so much fun for us.
We never quite know where they’re going to go.
A Band or a DJ? Yes.
This is where our act gets a little unusual.
Most people looking for NJ birthday party entertainment services eventually encounter the same decision:
Do we hire live music or a DJ?
We think that’s the wrong question.
Live music has something a DJ can’t reproduce. There is an immediacy to hearing a singer perform a favorite song a few feet away from you. It gives people something to watch, respond to and become part of.
A DJ, however, has essentially unlimited repertoire.
We combine the two.
We can sing Sinatra during cocktails, Fleetwood Mac over dinner, Billy Joel when somebody requests it and Springsteen when the Jersey contingent inevitably decides it’s time. Elton John? Lady Gaga? Pink? Manilow? Maroon 5?
Yes – we sing all of it. Neil Young? Neil Diamond? Neil Sedaka? Yes – we cover all the “Neils.” 
And if the next song absolutely needs to be the original recording of “Yeah!” by Usher? We’re not going to tell you it isn’t on the band’s setlist. We’ll play it.
That’s the beauty of combining live singers with a DJ.
We don’t have to choose between the energy of live music and the freedom of playing virtually any song ever recorded.
Neither do you.
Your Guests Probably Don't All Listen to the Same Music
This is the part of private-party planning that doesn't get discussed enough.
At a milestone birthday, you might have a 25-year-old, a 52-year-old and an 80-year-old sitting at the same table.
What exactly is the demographic? All of them.
That changes the job.
Finding the best birthday party entertainment in New Jersey isn’t necessarily about finding the performer with the biggest sound system or the longest song list. It’s about finding entertainers who understand how to move between generations without making the transitions feel ridiculous.
Sinatra can become Van Morrison.
Van Morrison can become Fleetwood Mac.
Fleetwood Mac can become Springsteen.
Springsteen can become Bon Jovi.
Bon Jovi can become Journey.
And eventually somebody’s daughter is going to request something released three weeks ago. That’s fine too.
Our live repertoire spans generations, and our DJ setup removes most of the limitations that would otherwise come with hiring two singers.
It’s also why people sometimes come across us while searching for a New Jersey band for private parties and discover that what they really wanted wasn’t necessarily a band at all.
They wanted a great party with live music.
Those aren’t quite the same thing.
So...Are You a Cover Band?
Technically, we perform covers.
But if you’re picturing matching wigs and Liza pretending to be Stevie Nicks for three hours, no.
We’re not that kind of cover band.
Still, searches for Springsteen cover bands in NJ, Jersey Shore cover bands, 80s cover bands in NJ, Fleetwood Mac cover bands in the NJ area and general cover bands in NJ often describe something broader than an actual tribute show.
People are usually telling Google what they want their party to feel like.
They want songs everybody knows.
They want musicians who can actually perform them. They want guests singing along. They want some Jersey in the room.
We can absolutely do that. In fact, most people would say that we really sound like the artists whose songs we perform. That’s not by accident. People like to hear their favorite songs the way that they remember them.
We’re singers from New Jersey. This music is part of our musical vocabulary. The difference is that Springsteen doesn’t require us to play another Springsteen song next. Neither does Fleetwood Mac.
Even someone considering a Neil Diamond tribute band for a private party in NJ may discover that what they really want is the moment when everyone in the room throws their hands in the air during “Sweet Caroline.”
We love that moment.
We just don’t need to spend the next 90 minutes pretending we’re Neil Diamond.
Holiday Parties Are Better When the Music Knows What Day It Is
Some parties come with their own soundtrack.
A Christmas party without a little Christmas music feels like somebody forgot something. A Halloween party should have at least a few songs with a darker side. And if you’re throwing a St. Patrick’s Day party, there’s a pretty good chance somebody is eventually going to want to hear “The Wild Rover.”
We like leaning into the occasion – without turning the entire night into a theme show.
At a Christmas party, we can mix live holiday favorites into our regular repertoire, get the room singing along and then gradually move from Christmas music into Sinatra, Billy Joel, Springsteen, 80s favorites and contemporary dance music. By later in the evening, the Santa hats may still be on, but nobody needs another rendition of “Jingle Bells.”
Halloween gives us an entirely different playground. “Thriller,” “Werewolves of London,” “I Put a Spell on You,” “Somebody’s Watching Me” and other Halloween favorites can be mixed into a much broader night of live and DJ music. Costumes tend to make people a little less inhibited anyway, so Halloween parties can get wonderfully unpredictable.
St. Patrick’s Day can move just as easily between Irish standards and the music everyone came to party to. The same idea works for New Year’s Eve, Fourth of July celebrations, Valentine’s parties and just about any other excuse people can find to get together.
That’s another place where our combination of live music and DJ capabilities makes sense. We can perform the songs that are fun to experience live and DJ the original versions of specialty or seasonal songs that aren’t part of our regular live repertoire.

And Yes, We Know Sinatra
The same distinction applies at the other end of the spectrum.
Searches for a Sinatra singer in NJ, Sinatra party singer in NJ or a New York Sinatra party singer often come from people trying to create a particular atmosphere rather than stage a tribute show. We understand exactly what they’re after.
Cocktails are being poured. People are arriving. The room looks great.
Sinatra sounds right.
So does Dean Martin. Tony Bennett. Bobby Darin.
That’s a world we know very well.
It also doesn’t mean the party needs to stay there. The music can loosen its tie as the night goes on.
In fact, that progression is something we use frequently when we’re creating music for a sophisticated cocktail party in Northern New Jersey: polished enough for the beginning of the evening without trapping the party there for the rest of the night.
Bergen County Is Our Home
We don’t have to study North Jersey party culture from afar. We live it.
We’ve spent years performing at restaurants, private homes, country clubs and event venues throughout Bergen County and Northern New Jersey.
That matters more than it might seem.
There is a particular overlap here between New York sophistication and New Jersey informality. People appreciate great food and a beautiful room, but they also aren’t terribly interested in sitting politely while the entertainment performs a recital. They want to participate.
Our years providing live music for restaurants have been great training for exactly that environment. In a restaurant, you learn quickly that the room is more important than the performer. Some nights people want to listen. Some nights they want to sing. Some nights the table in the corner decides it’s 1986 again.
You follow the room.

Across the Border Isn’t Exactly Far Away
North Jersey doesn’t stop culturally at the New York state line, and neither do we.
Pearl River, Nanuet, Nyack, Suffern, Piermont and the surrounding Rockland County communities are part of the same orbit for us.
Go a little farther north and the Hudson Valley opens up an entirely different collection of private-party settings – riverfront properties, restaurants, historic spaces, country clubs, estates and outdoor venues.
It’s one of the reasons Hudson Valley Tourism describes the region through several distinct counties rather than as one destination. There are a lot of different versions of a Hudson Valley party.
Rockland County maintains its own tourism and visitor resources, while Bergen County’s tourism resources are useful closer to home.
For us, they’re all within the world we regularly work in.
Sometimes the Party Moves Outside
Backyards are underrated.
So are patios, pool decks, terraces and parties where nobody has assigned seats.
They tend to change the relationship between the guests and the entertainment. People wander over. They make requests. Kids dance. Someone’s uncle wants the microphone.
We approve of most of this.
Outdoor events also require a little more thought about sound, electricity, weather, placement and how music carries through a property. We’ve gone deeper into those considerations on our outdoor party entertainment page.
But musically, the philosophy doesn’t change.
Read the party.
Then give it what it needs.
Some Celebrations Deserve Their Own Rules
A bridal shower, for example, usually doesn’t need nightclub energy at noon.
But it also doesn’t need three hours of polite background music.
We’ve found that live vocals work particularly well in that middle ground because guests can talk, eat and socialize – and then suddenly become part of the entertainment when the right song appears. That’s a big part of how we approach bridal shower entertainment.
Weddings create a different challenge altogether. Smaller receptions, especially restaurant weddings in NJ, are actually one of the clearest examples of why combining live performers with DJ capabilities can make so much sense.
And a company party may physically resemble a private celebration while requiring completely different instincts. That’s why we treat corporate event entertainment as its own discipline rather than assuming one party formula works everywhere.
The occasion changes.
The room changes.
The people change.
So should the entertainment.
Full-Size Energy Without a Full-Size Band
There is one other practical advantage to what we do.
We don’t take up much room.
That’s useful when your party is at home.
It’s useful when the restaurant has already squeezed twelve tables into a private dining room.
It’s useful when the venue would prefer the entertainment not occupy half the dance floor.
And it’s especially useful outdoors, where the perfect place for the music wasn’t necessarily designed as a stage.
Our footprint is small. Our sound isn’t.
We use professional equipment designed to create a polished, full sound without turning your party into a production setup.

We perform milestone birthdays, anniversaries, engagement parties, graduation parties, costume parties, themed parties, backyard celebrations, family parties, bridal showers, holiday parties, and other private events throughout Northern New Jersey, Bergen County, Rockland County and the Hudson Valley.
Are Liza & Josh a band or a DJ?
We're professional live singers with DJ capabilities. You may hear us referred to as DJ Vocalists. We can perform much of the evening live and use original recordings whenever a particular song, genre or moment works better that way. You get elements of both without hiring two separate entertainment companies.
Can you play music for different generations?
That's one of our specialties. Our live repertoire stretches from standards and classic favorites through current music, while our DJ capabilities give us access to virtually anything else your guests want to hear.
Do you take requests at private parties?
Absolutely. Requests often tell us where the party wants to go next. If we know the song, we may perform it live. (And PS - We know over 1000+ songs...) If the original recording makes more sense, we can DJ it.
Are you available for private parties in Bergen County?
Yes. Bergen County is our home base, and we perform throughout Northern New Jersey, including private homes, restaurants, country clubs and event venues.
Do you perform in Rockland County and the Hudson Valley?
Yes. We regularly travel into Rockland County and throughout the lower Hudson Valley, including the Pearl River, Nanuet, Nyack, Suffern and Piermont areas.
Can you provide quieter music during dinner and dance music later?
Yes - and this is where the live/DJ combination becomes particularly useful. We can create a polished atmosphere during cocktails and dinner, gradually increase the energy and then transition into live or DJ dance music as the party changes.
